Baleias ameaçadas pelo aquecimento global
O derretimento da camada de gelo na Antártida, causado pelo aquecimento global, ameaça baleias migratórias, que têm suas áreas de alimentação reduzidas.
Um estudo divulgado pelo Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) alerta para o facto de que o gelo marítimo do inverno será reduzido até cerca de 30% em alguns lugares.Esta situação será fatal para as baleias pois estas alimentam~se de Krill (pequenos camarões na sua maioria da espécie Euphansia superba) . O krill depende do gelo marinho para sobreviver. Se este diminuir os recursos alimentares das baleias irão escassear. Devido a isso, as baleias são obrigadas a viajar mais 500 quilômetros em busca de comida.
A conclusão é que o aumento das rotas de migração não apenas fará aumentar o montante de energia usado pelas baleias para chegar a suas áreas de alimentação como também reduzirá a temporada de alimentação por causa do tempo consumido para chegar até lá.
"Essencialmente, o que estamos vendo é que as baleias associadas ao gelo como as baleias mink da Antártida enfrentarão mudanças dramáticas em seu habitat dentro de um período não muito maior do que o período de vida desses animais", afirmou Heather Sohl, dirigente do WWF.
O documento foi divulgado para coincidir com o 60o encontro anual da Comissão Internacional Baleeira (IWC), que ocorre em Santiago (Chile), na próxima semana. Nesse encontro, o Brasil deve propor a criação de um Santuário para Baleias no Atlântico Sul.
Países baleeiros como o Japão e a Noruega, por outro lado, realizam uma campanha para que seja levantada a moratória sobre a caça comercial de desses animais, adotada pelo IWC em 1982.
Entre as baleias mais ameaçadas pelo derretimento do gelo na Antártida encontram-se a baleia-azul, o maior animal do mundo, e a cachalote.
Só recentemente, essas espécies começaram a recuperar depois de terem ficado à beira da extinção no século 20, antes da moratória da IWC entrar em vigor.

«ANOTHER GREEN PROPHET DEFECTS
One by one, the more honest of the scientists who fell for the anthropogenic global warming hoax are confessing their error. The latest is Germany’s Professor Fritz Vahrenholt. Melanie Phillips explains:
[A] new book, Die Kalte Sonne, written by Prof Dr Fritz Vahrenholt and geologist/paleontologist Dr. Sebastian Lüning, has caused a sensation even in advance of its official publication yesterday. For Prof. Vahrenholt, a renewable energy expert, was one of the fathers of the modern German green movement and believed everything preached by the IPCC. But according to Focus magazine, he is now a far sadder and wiser man:
‘Doubt came two years ago when he was an expert reviewer of an IPCC report on renewable energy. “I discovered numerous errors and asked myself if the other IPCC reports on climate were similarly sloppy.”
‘In his book he explains how he dug into the IPCC climate report and was horrified by what he had found. Then add the 10 years of stagnant temperatures, failed predictions, Climategate e-mails, and discussions he had with dozens of other skeptical elite scientists. That was more than enough. FOCUS quotes: “I couldn’t take it any more. I had to write this book.”’
I would add, with respect to the IPCC reports, that they are not only sloppy but contradictory. If someone tells you he agrees with the IPCC report, you should ask him, Which one? Ms. Phillips goes on to describe the chaos that has befallen Germany’s energy system as a result of politicians’ hysterical embrace of AGW theory and “green” energy. Germany has gone from being a net exporter of energy to a net importer. She concludes:
How could so many apparently sane and sensible people have departed so comprehensively from reason over the anthropogenic global warming scam and to have placed such blind faith in renewable energy sources? Several immediate reasons come to mind – indeed, I have enumerated them on many occasions – such as the brainwashing grip of environmental ideology, the western retreat from reason and truth, the manipulation of grant-funding, the intimidation of rigorous scientists, and the fact that so many, including some other scientists, have sloppily endorsed AGW theory without bothering to look at how the IPCC actually reached its bogus conclusions.
But the deeper question still remains. What is it in the psyche of the western mind that has caused so many people not only to be seduced by a set of obvious myths and fallacies over AGW theory but to be utterly resistant to every scrap of evidence over the past 25 years that showed they were totally out to lunch—the true ‘compelling case’ now demonstrated once again by Britain’s new Energy and Climate Change Secretary?
